The Buena varsity football team secured a 51-7 win against Channel Islands, Oct. 1  for the homecoming game. Buena pulled ahead early in the first  quarter and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game.

Before the game, senior starting tight end and linebacker Freddy Martinez made predictions about the game’s outcome.

“Since the loss of Cody Hoffman, Channel Islands has really been struggling with everything on the field,” Martinez said.

Buena gained momentum after an interception made by senior John Carter early in the 1st quarter.

“The interception was huge for us to start the game with,”Carter said. “It put us in scoring range allowing us to gain the lead early,” Carter said.

Carter’s performance on both sides of the field was a big influence to Buena for the entire game. Along with the interception he had a 50 yard touchdown reception and 107 yards off of kickoff returns.

Senior Jacob Murphy, who played offense, paved the way for the Bulldogs throughout the game. Murphy rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns on nine attempts with an average of 14 yards per carry. Another leading cause to the strong offensive presence of the Bulldogs was quarterback Junior Zane Carter completing all eight passing attempts for one touchdown and 110 yards.

Senior Kaden Anderson and Senior Carson Russel were significant factors for the Buena’s defense at linebacker. The two covered the field for the majority of the game with a combined 15 tackles between the two. Another defensive force for the Bulldogs was linebacker Freddy Martinez who specialized in rushing the passer in last Friday’s game with three sacks and one pass defense.

“Channel islands offensive line seemed slow the entire game making it easy for me to get through to the quarterback,” Martinez said.

The Bulldogs had a dominant performance in last Friday’s game against Channel islands making them currently 1-0 in their CIF league and 3-3 in the overall record. This upcoming Friday the Bulldogs play Santa Ynez in their second league game of the season.

“Santa Ynez appears to be a really good team… they are 5-1 and a win against them would be really big for our momentum because we would be 2-0 in CIF,” Carter said.
