Often, students wonder who’s behind the spirit weeks, student sections, rallies, and school dances. A team of 39 students, Buena’s Associated Student Body, are the minds behind many in and out of school events that go on year round. They dedicate their own time before, during and after school to bring many activities alive on campus to raise school spirit.
The spirit weeks at Buena are interactive days that bring the school together with various themes corresponding to an event or season. ASB brainstorms ideas for these days with the best interest of the entirety of the school, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to participate and engage.

In her third year with ASB, junior Mia Martinez has plenty of experience being part of the decision making process for these weeks.
“The spirit and athletics committee handles the responsibility of coming up with ideas that are easy for students to do,” Martinez said. “We talk amongst ourselves and put out social media posts and posters.”
The student sections at sport games are the most electric places to be while watching the game. Students are brought together to cheer for their fellow classmates as they play their hearts out on the playing field. ASB spends time prior to each game planning and decorating according to the theme they choose to mix in more fun for students to fill up the stands.
“The spirit and athletics committee comes up with all the spirit week ideas and the spirit sections,” junior Taylor Smith said. “When decorating we can sign up for hours… and make balloon clusters and posters.”
In ASB, hours are what students need to complete for their semester grade. They need to track 15 hours of work at chosen events which don’t include dances, ultimately leading to more time they spend working to help keep the school functioning.
The next anticipated dance set for April 12 is prom, and the theme revealed to be La La Land is getting juniors and seniors excited for a night in the city of stars. Due to this being such a highly anticipated event, ASB has been planning prom since Sept. to make this night a memorable one for upperclassmen. Most are even showing up to help set up the dance the morning of.
Senior Royal Riggs has worked on many dances throughout his time being in ASB.
“Prom and homecoming are super fun to plan and work at,” Riggs said. “You get an experience that most kids won’t get to have.”
Buena’s students that are part of ASB spend a lot of their free time making sure school morale stays high with numerous interactive events. It’s often that the time our peers spend making events come to life are overlooked so be sure to thank your peers in the ASB class for the work they do to make our campus a thriving place.
