Senior Andy Carrillo has consistently excelled both academically and athletically through his high school years. . He has been a dedicated member of the baseball team all four years of his high school career, earning himself a Division 2 baseball scholarship to Regis University in Colorado. At the same time, he has set himself up for academic success as a member of AVID. As Carillo’s time in high school comes to a close, he looks forward to the next chapter of his life.
Throughout his four years at Buena, Carrillo has had “a lot of fun”, largely thanks to the “great group of friends” he’s made, who are “pretty funny” and helped keep things light hearted.

Since his freshman year, Carrillo has met many people and formed lasting relationships with students at Buena, many of whom are teammates that he’s bonded with over the years, including fellow senior Kaelen Davis.
Davis noted that Carrillo has always been quick to look out for what’s best for his friends, willing to put the well-being of others above his own, always looking out for what’s best for them.
“If you come to him with a problem he’s going to be there for you,” Davis said.
Carrillo fell in love with baseball from the moment he started playing and has been devoted to improving his skills ever since.
“I’ve played baseball my whole life,” Carrillo said. “I started playing when I was six years old and I’m determined to play as long as I can.”
Carrillo will have the chance to continue playing the sport he’s most passionate about as he received a scholarship to Regis University, a Division 2 school in Colorado, this past year.
“I’m definitely going to miss my mom and dad and all my siblings,” Carrillo said. “It’s going to be hard being away from them but I know they’re just one phone call away”
Carrillo’s also stayed committed to his academic pursuits, maintaining focus on his studies. As he continues his education at Regis, he looks forward to majoring in criminal justice.
Throughout the college application and acceptance process Carrillo thanks his Avid class for the aid and advice they’ve provided him.
“I joined AVID because it helped me for college and apply for FAFSA and other Universities,” Carrillo said.
When school work happens to start piling up for him he takes an approach similar to the one he takes on the baseball field.
“I like to take one thing at a time, especially on homework,” Carrillo said. “I can’t do five assignments at once, I need to finish one thing and then move on to the next.”
Carrillo looks forward to opening the next door in his life as he steps onto a bigger field and campus coming next fall. He’ll never forget the valuable memories he’s made and what he’s learned these past 4 years.
