The Buena Girls Golf team had a very successful season going 6-1 record in league and 11-4 overall record. They took a tough final loss to San Marcos High School after a six-match win streak. Three golfers earned first-team all-league honors and senior Avery Wells was one of them.
Wells’s favorite professional golfer is Viktor Hovland, “he always has a smile on his face even if he is not playing his best.” She likes his strong mental game when he’s on the green and it motivates Wells to keep her head up.
Wells has been a part of the BHS girls golf team for 3 years now; she joined her sophomore year at Buena. Growing up Wells played multiple sports but golf called her name, thanks to her dad. “I used to play soccer and tennis and I just didn’t like them as much and I wasn’t as good,” Wells said.
Wells takes her time to perfect her craft in order to earn the title of first-team all-league honors. She uses her strong mental game and tough determination to do so. “[but golf,] it’s a game against yourself,” Wells said
Wells’s favorite color is emerald green because it matches her eyes and she thinks it’s very pretty. She also enjoys watching the TruTV series Impractical Jokers, because it always makes her laugh and puts her in such a good mood.
Wells’s father was her inspiration to start golfing, “I didn’t like it at first,” Wells said, but she kept it going because her dad was better than her. She is a very competitive person which drives her determination.
One of her close friends and teammates, senior Rylee McDuffee has been on the team since freshman year. McDuffee and Wells met in sixth grade and McDuffee felt the click in their friendship. Wells and McDuffee have been good friends ever since.
“She’s one of the kindest and smartest people I know,” McDuffee said
McDuffee describes Wells as someone you can always count on and go to whenever you need. The golf team called her “Coach Aves because she really has a passion for that sport,” McDuffee said.
With that, Wells wrapped up her successful senior season in hopes she can continue her golf career in the future since it’s her “favorite thing to do in the world.”
Wells wants to play golf in college and as well as after that. “I plan on playing golf for the rest of my life,” Wells said.
