Students excitedly surrounded the quad Wednesday, May 22, to participate in Buena’s first ever Pie a Teacher Day and it was a smashing hit. Featuring teachers including Scott Manninin, Alejandra Gonzales, Molly Ensminger, Sarah Pinkstaff, and Jessica Castaneda. A.S.B. charged two dollars a pie and students were able to smash the sugary plate directly into teachers’ faces.
The most popular of the volunteers was Castaneda, a freshman English teacher and Journalism Adviser and was pied 17 times. Then Gonzalez and Manninin who are elective teachers whose classes are frequent hang out spots for students and so were pied frequently as well. Lastly, Ensminger who is taking over the drama next year.
Ensminger shared how fun it was to see so many students interested in school activities. While in previous years she opted out of most teacher-related events due to not wanting to be put in a vulnerable position.
“I feel that once I take on drama full time I will be closing myself off from most of the campus life but I feel that this opportunity allows me to have more fun,” Ensminger said. “I look forward to participating for years to come in future events.”
A.S.B. is very hopeful in the planning of future events such as these. They plan to make Pie-a-Teacher an annual occurrence. Sophomore Nicholas Faught is on the events planning committee and expressed how happy A.S.B. was with the turnout and student support they got.
“It is always nice to get a positive reaction from the people we plan these events for … we do it for [the students] and we use the money for the benefit of Buena,” Faught said.
The money from this event particularly is going towards prom 2025. A.S.B. hopes by planning and hosting things that students participate in, they will have more funds to upgrade things students care about, like more dances and elaborate activities.
Freshman Silas Valentine is excitedly taking advantage of all A.S.B. is offering, including pieing his favorite teacher, Casteneda.
“She is my favorite teacher. I kinda felt bad putting all that whip cream in her face but it was really fun at the same time… I hope she does it again next year,” Valentine said.
All in all the students left with a smiling face after the lunchtime shenanigans; it was a great way to boost the morale of Buena as we bring the year to a close.
