Amber Gale, Staff Writer

Amber Gale is a high school junior and a first year journalist here at Buena Speaks. In her free time, she likes to travel, draw, bake, and work in her garden. She is a classic rock fan with her favorite artists being Queen, The Beatles, and ABBA. She is currently working towards a career in ecology and conservation. Some of her greatest inspirations for working in the ecology field are David Attenbourgough, Rachel Carson, and Jane Goodall. She is a devoted student and is excited to persist through the remainder of her junior year.

A changing test. Recently the SAT has been removed as a requirement from many colleges and universities. As a result of this change, many students are debating the importance of taking the SAT all together. “I really only recommend students take the SAT or ACT if you have a list of colleges you are going to apply to, and one of them is requiring it,” Debbas said.

On the brink of extinction. Over the past 40 years, the monarch butterfly population has declined drastically. In 2020, the monarch was rejected from the endangered species list, despite meeting the requirements. The US Fish and Wildlife Service stated that this decision was made due to some other species having priority. “We may be witnessing the collapse of the western migration of monarch butterflies. A migration of millions of monarchs reduced to two thousand in a few decades. “ (Xerces Society)

Aftermath of a variant. Since the end of winter break, it is clear that absences across the school have been unusually high. The reason for much of this change is unsurprisingly COVID-19 related. With the introduction of Omicron into the US, there has been an exponential increase in coronavirus cases, including here at Buena. A new variant. Moving into the 2021 holiday season a new COVID-19 variant has been identified: Omicron. This identification comes as COVID cases are increasing and the holiday season is kicking into full swing. This has sparked new worries about the future of the pandemic. “The Omicron variant appears to be spreading quickly among vaccinated people and unvaccinated people alike” the New York Times reported.

This was the first live performance to be done in front of a large audience for the Drama Department after COVID. “I think it went incredibly well,” Pomposo said. “ I am so proud of everyone, and I can say for the first time in a while that I am proud of myself too”.

The AP Endeavor. As we continue with the 2021-2022 school year, the AP textbooks pile high for classes such as AP Biology and AP US History. After a year online, students must adapt back to life on campus and to their APs. For some, this has been a struggle. "The pandemic enabled kids to learn how to cut corners and that has really affected their learning and their work ethic now that we are back in person," AP Biology teacher Cody Foster said.
