Seniors reflect on school closures
March 1, 2021
Due to this school year being online, seniors have not been able to have a traditional final year of high school, but there is still hope. Undoubtedly, the class of 2021 has had an unexpected senior year. The unforeseen corona virus has been affecting everyone’s lifestyle for almost one year now.
With over four hundred seniors at Buena, each student is in a unique situation during this pandemic. Some seniors enjoy online schooling, are easily able to find motivation schooling from home, and even prefer it to school in person.
“This school year has not been the greatest because for me it’s difficult to find motivation to push myself to want to do the work and it’s hard to learn looking at a screen all day but overall school is the same it’s always been,” senior Sebastian Garcia said.
On the other hand, some students miss going to school everyday and interacting with friends. Either way, students find a way to make the most of their senior year.
“I’ve been playing baseball since I was small and my senior year is more special than all the others,” Garcia said. “So far this year we’ve been having practices with groups following the restrictions but it feels good to be back out there”.
Students have been in a distance learning setting for almost a year now. When the school closure first occurred nobody knew how long it would last, in fact when exactly students will return to school is still unknown though the district homes to reopen school April 4, the week students return from spring break.
“I can’t speak for all seniors but I do wish we could go back to school soon,” senior Maya Lomeli said. “Nobody wants their senior year taken away, senior year is supposed to be one of the most memorable years of our life, and not being able to see my friends as much is a big factor.”
Making the best of this year is all students can do and try to stay positive. The class of 2021 is having a senior year like no other. No one knows what will happen till the rest of the school year or what changes will be made. However, one must make the most of it.
“This senior year will definitely be remembered forever but with different memories than other senior classes,” Lomeli said.
