After the ending of “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), fans of Marvel content were left anticipating the future of the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU), which includes new popular shows like “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”. This show gives already beloved characters a new sense of plot during the age after “Avengers: Endgame”.
“This show will have a big impact on the MCU because it is introducing us to the next generation of Avengers in a subtle way,” sophomore and Marvel fan Jaclyn Crone said.
“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” takes place after “Avengers: Endgame” and series “WanadaVision” conclusion, approximately six months after, according to Time online newspaper. The show revolves around the effects of the world after a major event called The Blip was resolved and main character Falcon, also known as Sam Wilson, and the Winter Soldier, also known as Bucky Barnes, unintentionally teams up to stop new enemies from disrupting the world further than it already has been.
“I mainly look forward to seeing how Sam and Bucky get along. They both have very different ideas,” senior and Marvel fan Hope Stewart said. “I’m excited to see how they teach each other their ideals.”
Any scene of Marvels’ fights always keeps you on your toes and leaves you in awe of the mastery the studio has over CGI animation. The first few minutes of the pilot episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, New World Order, the audience will immediately notice that Falcon is still affected by the results of “Endgame” and the new era of heroism and his place in it. Although, his feelings are put aside so that he can do his job for the U.S Government. Any scene of Marvels’ fights always keeps you on your toes and leaves you in awe of the mastery the studio has over CGI animation.
“As an artist, and a huge Marvel nerd, I pay attention to the scenes and how the camera shoots the scene first before understanding their words,” Stewart said. “There’s so many little interpretations of the characters and developments!”
The acting is, as always, spot on. This success has to do with the fact that characters like Falcon and the Winter Soldier are still played as their previous actors- Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Both actors still have a great understanding of their characters even after “Endgame”. The actors have a remarkable skill of switching from heroic superheroes to relatable civilians on the fly.
“I love how the actors can be funny and mess around one second [and then] become very serious in a matter of seconds,” Crone said.
“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” deals with a surprising amount of racial topics. From dealing with police brutality to discrimination from banks, this show so far has done an excellent job at including the struggles that Falcon, an African American, has to witness and deal with himself for all his life.
“What I like most about Falcon and the Winter Soldier is how it deals with modern day problems in a weird way as well as giving more depth to Sam and Bucky’s characters,” Crone said.
However, with any TV series, you can expect questions to be left unanswered and cliff hangers until the very end of the season. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” season one will only have six episodes. The show has been out on Disney+ since March 19 and updating every Friday since then.
However, some may hesitate to watch this show since it is not meant for people who can not handle gore, especially if they get sick to the sight of large amounts of extreme violence. Although it is rated for people who are 16 years or older, viewers’ discretion should be heavily advised.
“In the beginning of the show Sam states we need new heroes,” Stewart said. “I think that’s a sign that the MCU will undergo a huge change and begin hopefully the next phase- that or an entirely new phase!”
It can be confusing watching “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” without context. Any Marvel fan would recommend to watch all the movies and shows. However, if someone just wants to watch enough Marvel to understand “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, it is best to watch “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Black Panther” (2018), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) in this order.
Overall, this show is a must-watch for any Marvel fan, or a show to start watching for passtime, and could be yet another good show to watch to understand racial discrimination in a way that might be simpler for most.
