Going into the April 12 game, Buena (2-17) was eager to beat Pacifica Tritons who had won their last two games. After seven brutal innings, they fell to the Tritons losing 6-0.
Pacifica started the game off on fire. By the time Buena forced three outs in the top of the first, the Tritons scored three. Buena’s initial at-bats came up empty in the first inning.
“I feel as a team we are there. It is just about executing and making the plays we need to make,” sophomore Mason Trigo said. “Next season once we put that all together I think we can be a really good team.”
The Bulldogs’ struggles at the plate did not carry into their defense. Buena’s defense was solid as they only allowed two baserunners and no runs to score until the fifth inning.
After being shut down in the last three innings, the Tritons started the fifth with multiple hits allowing them to score and yet another run increasing their lead to four. Once Buena forced three outs they were able to finally make contact with the ball and got a couple of hits with runners on base. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Pacificawas able to force Buena’s third out before they were able to score.
In the top of the sixth, Pacifica connected again with the ball, earning another run, bringing the score to a a steep 6-0 shutout. Buena, looking to close the gap with just one more inning, was then able to force a third out. Tritan’s pitching was dominant and Buena once again could not score. For the rest of the game, both teams held strong not allowing either team to score. In the end, Buena was not able to pull out the win versus a scorching hot Tritons team.
“Going into the end of this season, next season this team can plan to do great things. We have enough individual talent and if we put all of our strengths together we start seeing more success rapidly,” sophomore Brody Kaylor said.
