October at Buena kicked off with a Fall Festival, hosted in the quad Oct. 11 from 6: 00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event had a haunted maze, pumpkin decorating, a costume contest, a variety of concessions and the movie Hocus Pocus, projected on an inflatable screen in the quad.
The haunted maze was a huge hit among attendees and took place in the cafeteria. For $3, attendees got a wristband allowing them to go through the maze twice. Creepy decor, ominous smoke machines and red lights gave the maze an eerie feel. A large black tarp covering chairs functioned as a fort, giving the cafeteria the illusion of being a maze.
After going through the maze, junior Alexandra Kurtz felt that all involved did a fantastic job.
“[ASB] did really well setting it up and setting the mood for an actual haunted maze,” Kurtz said.
Several students in drama volunteered to take on the job of being scare actors, wearing bloody makeup and jumping out at guests throughout the maze.
Assistant principal Tiffany Dyer was proud of how well the drama kids did setting the mood for the haunted maze.
“It looks awesome in there, [and] the students have phenomenal makeup,” Dyer said.
Cult classic Halloween movie Hocus Pocus was projected outside in the quad an hour after the event started. While the movie was being played, there was a pumpkin decorating table that provided paint and had pumpkins being sold for $3. This was a hit amongst families who brought their young children; the event as a whole catered to all age groups.
The costume contest was held at 7:30 p.m. Nine people participated in the competition, and winners were chosen by ASB members based on effort and creativity. A group of students dressed as “Alvin and the Chipmunks” placed third, a costume from the movie “Scream” placed second, and a young boy dressed as Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” placed first. Prizes were awarded to each of the three winners, third place receiving candy and a Squishmallow, second place getting a digital camera and first place being given a Lego set.
In addition to these activities, attendees had lots of options for snacks and drinks. Shirly temples were being sold for $3, and the festival also had popcorn for $2 and cotton candy for $4.
An unfortunate setback occurred, at 8:00 p.m. the sprinklers turned on, due to the movie being played on the grass, ASB had to stop the movie early. The sprinklers affected the pumpkin decorating as well, the painting station having to be shifted away from the grass.
While the event was set to last from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., a good amount of guests left after the sprinklers turned on due to the movie being shut off. But despite the rough end, the event seemed a big success in showing Buenas halloween spirit.
