An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 men and women are trafficked internationally according to the Office for Victims of Crime Association. This worldwide industry lures in its victims at their most vulnerable state.

Human trafficking is not talked as much as it should be, considering that California has the highest rate throughout the states. With the estimated 600,000 to 800,000, 70 percent being women, and 50 percent being children. An estimation of “200,000 American children at risk for trafficking into the sex industry” according to The Office for Victims of Crimes. This startling statistic shows that many are greatly vulnerable and perhaps may not even know it. It appears that women are are a higher risk for human trafficking due to sexual exploitation.

Traffickers come in different ways, using tactics such as manipulation. They may come when one least expects it, disguising themselves with false job titles, or family members for example.  In 2019 alone there were 1,912 suspicious business activities reported  according to the polaris project. Traffickers use their victims as “opportunities to make money” according to the No Project. An organization that introduces an anti-slavary campaign, specifically for youth awareness. It’s important that the younger generation is knowledgeable about this subject to avoid potentially dangerous situations. With this knowledge the younger generations will be able to recognize and seek help for those that are not able to.

There are  ways to help avoid traffickers, such as being observant and vigilant in public settings. Watch your surroundings when going out, be observant of people around you and seek help as soon as possible if you feel you may be in danger. Maybe avoid going out alone, and be careful of the people that you meet, physically and digitally. You never know people’s true intentions, so always be prepared.

There are also some companies and organizations that are speaking out about this subject, sharing ways to help victims recover and educate the public with their data. The National Human Trafficking Hotline is a organization that provides services for victims, as well as provides protection for them. They receive information about trafficking locations and contact authorities to handle the cases. In doing this creates a safer environment for all.

It’s important that the public knows about human trafficking because it happens everywhere, in some cases very close to home. With the knowledge of this growing issue,  prevention rates will increase and we can keep our communities a safe place for all.
