The Ventura School District Art Showcase was held at the Vita Art Center for the first time May 25 and for several days, people were able to visit and view the works of many of the talented young artists in Ventura Unified, from  kindergarten through highschool.

“The thing that is really important about art is that it’s a [way] we can express ourselves [and] can process our experiences,” art teacher Nicole Rapattoni said. “It’s a place where we get to be creative and figure things out, and not always have a plan, and if sometimes [things] don’t work it’s a happy accident.”

  • Stargazing by Kenzie Herbert Herbert’s AP portfolio this year was focused on hiding faces in paintings, so for this piece “Stargazing”, she strived to capture the feeling of longing and simply wanting to be at peace, by displaying an image of two people laying by one another and looking at the stars.

  • Bugs by Rylann Howard Howard came up with the character portrayed in the painting, “Bugs”, in a previous painting she’d done, but decided to give this unique and wacky looking character the spotlight by making it the main focus of this painting.

  • Organic by Rey Brookes Sophomore Rey Brookes’ thesis investigation was on duality and how things that can be beyond beautiful can, at the same time, also be scary or even dangerous. “Art is a creative output, it’s a therapy, [and] a way for me to express myself and my person,” Brookes said. “It makes me feel comfortable [and] I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t able to put myself out there.”

  • Right, what’s all this then? • Love and Bubbles by Kenzie Herbert Senior Kenzie Herbert created the art piece “Love and Bubbles” which represents a memory from her childhood, inspired from the famous Cinderella scene where she is seen cleaning and is surrounded by bubbles. In each bubble are hidden faces, all depicting different emotions. “[My artwork] represents a memory that I have with my papa and the picture is actually of me when I was kid,” Herbert said. This piece was given special recognition and was given the Outstanding Excellence award as well as was featured on the Art Show flier, which was displayed in the window at the front of the building. There was also a sized down version of the poster which was up for grab by the public.
