A new addition to the Ghostbusters franchise released Mar. 22 after a 3 year drought of production. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the sequel to the 2021 “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” movie and brings a fresh and exciting twist to the story.
The amount of time spent working on the movie paid off in the long run. With a $100 million budget, it gained an 83% on Rotten tomatoes and grossed over $176 million worldwide, making it the ninth highest grossing film in 2024.
The story follows the Spengler family as they find themselves facing a chilling challenge when they encounter a mysterious orb containing a powerful entity, known as Garraka, that no one has faced before. They soon learn that Gaarraka is capable of controlling the climate to the coldest of temperatures with its icy touch. The Ghostbusters uncover the secrets behind Garraka, learning more about its origins and how to defeat it.
The movie stars many well known actors such as Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfard, Mckenna Grace, and many returning actors from the old movies such as Bill Murray returning as Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stanz, and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore.
Their performances in this film were impressive. You can tell that each and every actor does a great job connecting their character with the audience, using personal experiences. In this case there was a “forbidden relationship” trope with two characters, which is a recent trend in pop culture.
Having these familiar faces back brings out the unique charm and humor of the movie and gives the audience a sense of nostalgia for those who have watched the original movie, all while introducing viewers to new characters to give them an exciting storyline.
The costuming in this film is another thing that feels nostalgic as they brought back the iconic brown jumpsuits from the previous movies. When fighting ghosts, the Spengler family wears the jumpsuit with their last name on their chest. But, they also brought a new look to the big screen with a big red jacket to keep them from freezing in the cold. This shows the audience the development of the franchise as it will, hopefully, continue to grow.
The special effects along with the CGI (Computer-generated imagery) in this movie work really well together. CGI artists put so much work into really bringing the movie to life and making the audience feel like they are really experiencing it. Unlike the newer movies, the older films didn’t use CGI, since it was not yet a thing. But now that “Ghostbusers: Frozen Empire” relies on CGI, it looks much more realistic and makes it look better all together.
Overall, this movie is a great addition to the Ghostbusters franchise and is a must watch.
