As the showing of the fall play gets closer and closer, the drama department puts together their rendition of a classic play, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. It will be shown Nov. 7-9 and 14-16 in Buena’s auditorium.
The town gets the scoop on these characters played by the gossips. They paint a picture for the audience using their words and opinions on Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones.
“They help narrate the story and give details to the audience and enlighten them on what’s going on. Without the gossips, it wouldn’t be as detailed,” Senior Annika Harris said.
The lead characters in this play are Ichabod Crane (Chase Dykeman), Brom Bones (Jack Fredericks), Katrina Van Tassel (Kai Wyatt) and the gossips (Solana Warren, Annika Harris, Megan Webb and Koi Mercado).
The version of the play being used was arranged by Bethany Lutheran College. It is in no way like the Tim Burton movie, “it’s rhythmic and is like a big poem,” Harris said.
Ichabod Crane, a new schoolmaster from Connecticut comes to Sleepy Hollow to teach at the local school. Almost everyone is obsessed with Mr. Crane, all except Brom Bones, the idol of town. What Bones does the town follows, he is used to being the male Madonna of Sleepy Hollow and with Crane in the picture now, things aren’t looking too well for him.
Bones doesn’t understand why everyone, including the ladies, is interested in Ichabod Crane. Women are amazed by Crane, they fall to his feet when they hear he’s traveled the world through books. It ruffles Bone’s feathers because he desires to be the only thing girls lay their eyes on, not Crane.
Tensions rise as Bones finds out that the one lady he truly wants, the wealthy and proper Katrina Van Tassel, is not interested in him but rather adores Crane. Conflict strikes when Crane becomes aware of this “battle” between Bones and himself over Van Tassel.
One day Crane wanders alone in the night, making himself a victim for the Headless Horseman. The Horseman lost his head in the revolutionary war, so he looks for people’s heads to take for himself. Crane was unlucky that day, the Horseman took his pumpkin head and threw it at Crane’s head causing him to vanish. This brings the audience to the end of the play, when Ichabod’s fate is in the hands of The Headless Horseman.
The cast is jazzed about the play because they have never done it before. They all work extremely well together, the play has been coming along well, at a rapid pace. “Everyone has good chemistry and plays off of each other really well,” Wyatt said.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a perfect kick start to the spooky season. Is a great play to watch when you’re in the fall mood. “I hope the title intrigues people, and that they find joy in what we put on,” Harris said.
