As fall returns, the Krispy Kreme’s Golden Harvest Collection has returned to our local Krispy Kreme in Oxnard, Calif. with three new donuts added to their menu Sept. 16. Krispy Kreme’s new fall savors and spices into their donuts attracts Buena students to relish a bite of delightful fall-themed treats.
The new fall season items include the Maple Buttercreme Doughnut, Oatmeal Kreme Pie Doughnut, Salted Caramel Cheesecake Doughnut and the return of the Spiced Apple Filled donuts. The warm and fall-colored appearances have made people, especially younger audiences, very excited for the chance to taste a seasonal donut.
“It was one of the most flavorful and delicious donuts I have ever tasted,” freshman Kimberly Ambriz said. “It felt as if I tasted fall flavors with the cinnamon and caramel that melted right into my mouth. The Maple Buttercreme donut was my favorite.”
Although there have been many good feelings, there have also been mixed reviews on the new collection.
“I thought that the donuts were okay,” junior Lexie Granados said, “I thought that they could have done more to add to the donuts instead of adding flavored buttercream on half of the donuts and calling it a ‘fall special. I was a little disappointed.”
“The donuts were either sugar or the ‘Original Glazed’ donuts from the donut shop. They should have added other types of donuts that also play into the fall theme,” Ambriz said.
On Krispy Kreme’s official website, descriptions of the seasonal donuts confirmed that half of the donuts in the Golden Harvest Collection are used with their Original Glazed donuts and just topped with flavored buttercream displaying somewhat “unoriginal” donuts that make up their limited time only collection.
Despite the criticism of the new donuts, it’s still an exciting journey to taste new flavors and fillings for a seasonal time that include many spices and sweetness. I went to my local Krispy Kreme to see what all the excitement was about.
The warm glow of the “Hot Now” sign welcomes you as you step inside Krispy Kreme. The interior might be a bit plain, but the warm and delightful atmosphere makes up for it. The smell of freshly baked donuts wafts through the air and the dimmed lighting envelops a comforting embrace.
The display case showcases an array of colorful and delicious donuts. The seasonal decorations and flavors of apple cinnamon and maple add a festive touch, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a taste of fall through studying, hanging out with friends or playing into the fall theme.
I bought a llsmall box containing one of each of the seasonal donuts, amounting to approximately ten dollars for four donuts. Considering getting a taste of different fall-themed donuts, it is a fair deal. Eagerly anticipated to taste each flavor, I gave honest reviewings from least to most favorite donuts.
Spice Apple Filled Doughnut
The warm, sugared doughnut was decent but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Its sweetness includes both sugar and cinnamon just triggers your mouth to want more bites. The spiced apple filling in the donut was a complete miss for me, the flavor did not bring that yummy factor I was hoping for. Easily a 6/10 rating.
Maple Buttercreme Doughnut
The glazed, sweetened dough cake hits the spot for a dessert craving. The lovable taste of a glazed donut with maple buttercream and hints of caramel swirls on the top provokes your sweet tooth. The combination of the maple and white buttercream allows it to turn to a rich brown color that has colorful sprinkles on top which contrast with each other, easily appealing to the eye. However, in my opinion, it should have been glazed with different flavors and toppings instead of using buttercream. Simply an 8/10 rating.
Salted Caramel Cheesecake Doughnut
Another glazed, salted caramel treat with a recognizable swirl of cream cheese mixed with dulce de leche (caramel sauce) filling. It is sprinkled with salted caramel flavored crunch that boosts sweetness and saltiness even more. The rich filling of sweet and salted [caramel] helps give a person complete satisfaction of contrasting flavor. Again, Krispy Kreme could have improved with toppings instead of swirling buttercream. An impressive rating that’s 8.3/10.
Oatmeal Kreme Pie Doughnut
The best taste appealing donut that includes everything that screams “FALL.” The unglazed donut with a vanilla, KREME filling inside, was covered in cookie dough icing and streusel toppings, with hints of cinnamon and brown sugar. It gave a pleasant mouth-watering flavor with the rich combination of spice and sweet. An exquisite nutty flavor is later tasted from the oatmeal cookie on top with an even more rich, sweet filling that blends in my mouth with spice, sweet and nuts. An excellent 9/10 rating.
Overall, Krispy Kreme’s new addition of donuts to the fall season allows donut lovers to try an exquisite amount of flavors and toppings to a donut as never before.
