On Feb. 8, 2026 at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, after past players had been re-introduced onto the field, Green Day performed as an opener for the 60th (LX) Superbowl: Seahawks versus Patriots.
Their performance had originally been introduced on January 18th, by the NFL. The punk-rock band performed a mix of three of their more popular songs: “Holiday”, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, and lastly, “American Idiot”. There were different reactions to the performance. Some fans appreciated the ‘90s and early 2000s nostalgia that it brought to the game, with lots of “fans react[ing] to the posts by celebrating the band’s classic sound and strong stage energy.” However, not everyone shared those feelings, as others disagreed with the bands’ political ideology.
Since some of the lyrics had to be censored due to the performance being shown on live national television, some viewers were disappointed about not being able to hear fully what was said as well as the fact that Green Day didn’t use their performance to protest the current events in the U.S.
Overall though, despite the slightly mixed reactions, the show brought an energetic and celebratory beginning to the 60th Superbowl, setting the energy for the game, and for many, a triumphant win.
