Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA), point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder has won his second Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the year for the NBA, May 17, 2026. Alexander, also known as SGA, has become the 14th player of all time to be a two- time consecutive MVP in the NBA and seventh player of all time to win two MVPs before being 28-years-old.
SGA started his career with the Los Angeles Clippers, but a year after being with them, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. SGA has always been a good basketball player, but when he really started to blow up with his stats was the 2022-2023 NBA season.
SGA has been seen as one of the best players this whole season, but it hasn’t been an easy task for him to win MVP. Players like Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić, Victor Wembanyama, Cade Cunningham and Jaylen Brown definitely haven’t made it easy. However, with his hard work and determination to win, he got 83 first place votes to win the 2025-2026 MVP. But some don’t agree and think SGA deserves the MVP like sophomore and basketball enjoyer Kaedyn Martinez.
“SGA is a good player and plays good ball, but, personally, I feel he flops a lot and isn’t as deserving for another MVP like other players,” Martinez said.
During the 2025-2026 NBA season, SGA and his Oklahoma City Thunder were the first seed in the regular season with the record of 64-18 to help his case of MVP even more. Going into the playoffs being the one seed, they already had an extra push in the playoffs. With their current playoff run they have 4-0 the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers.
But Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) has a difficult road ahead if he wants to return to the NBA Finals. He and the Oklahoma City Thunder would first have to get past the San Antonio Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, the unanimous NBA Defensive Player of the Year. If they can defeat the Spurs, they would then likely face either the New York Knicks or the Cleveland Cavaliers, making their path to a championship even more challenging.
“Obviously, [they are] a really good team,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of the Spurs in an interview with ESPN. “They have been right behind us all year, so we obviously don’t take them in the slightest. They are a really good team.”
