This time the focus was on the Health Swedish Hospital in the north of the city. On April 25, 2026, a shooting occurred at north of Chicago, Illinois. In the incident, a police officer was killed and another officer was seriously injured. The incident sparked discussions about security in hospitals, police protocols and dealing with offenders.
According to police, two officers had arrested a suspect for a robbery. During transport, the man claimed to have swallowed drugs, which is why he was taken to the hospital for examination. Although the suspect was checked for weapons, according to hospital staff, he later managed to get a gun and shoot at the officers. One of the police officers, 38-year-old officer John Bartholomew, died the same day from his injuries, and his partner was treated and remains in critical condition.
After the shooting, chaos settled down around the hospital. The building was sealed off, patients and employees had to be brought to safety, while special forces searched for the shooter. The suspect escaped from the hospital but was arrested a short time later by a SWAT unit. The police secured the weapon, a 10mm gun.
It was later revealed that the suspect had already been noticed for serious crimes and was temporarily under surveillance. Politicians and police officials therefore criticised the judicial system of the county and called for stricter security measures.
“One act of violence can shake an entire city, but unity and courage are stronger than fear,” Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson said.
At the same time, it is being investigated how the suspect was able to get a weapon despite controls.
The incident attracted attention far beyond Chicago. Many people laid down flowers and candles for the killed officer. Johnson spoke of a “tragic day for Chicago” and emphasised the dangers to which police officers are exposed on a daily basis. On social media, many citizens discussed the increasing violence in the city and the security of public institutions.
