On a cool Monday evening of Jan. 26, the Buena Bulldogs girls varsity soccer team wins in a landslide victory for the , 5-0. vs the Santa Barbara Dons.
Before the game kicked off, Buena’s seniors brought out their favorite staff members for staff appreciation, acknowledging the role each person played in getting the player to where they are today. Bren Emmell-Lewey, brought out music director Tim MacDonald, Julianna Ramirez walked with English teacher Ale Posada, Alex Orrantia with ASB teacher Meghan Malloy, and Kiana Dubransky with counselor David Vallejo were some of the chosen staff members.
The game started with the Dons’ possession but quickly the Bulldogs got the ball back to the Dons’ side of the field. The Bulldogs played very well on offense, having the ball on the Dons’ side throughout most of the whole first half. With a goal from junior forward Bella Fenley, the Bulldogs were first on the board, 1-0.
Throughout the rest of the first half, the Bulldogs kept pushing, not letting the Dons score and pressuring their defense. A few more shots from the Bulldogs came before the half ended, yet none were made, leaving the score 1-0 going into halftime.
Starting the second half, the Bulldogs got the ball first, doing well by pressuring the Dons’ defense, leaving off where they started in the first half. However,this half, the Bulldogs were on a mission to put the game away.
The Bulldogs were able to score another four times with senior forward Tyler Hickerson, junior midfielder Alexis Kimble, junior midfielder/forward Olivia Barajas and junior forward Heaven Marquez all scoring to get the Bulldogs a lead of 5-0. The win after the defense played amazingly, not letting the Dons score once all game.
“I feel fantastic. I’m really happy that this team was in first place, and we have two games left to go. I feel we are playing really well.” girls’ varsity soccer head coach Trish Butterbaugh said.
With this win tonight, the team is eligible for playoffs this year, a well-earned accomplishment .
“Its exciting. Everyone’s getting pumped up from it, and [hopefully the team] will win CIF this year,” said Fenley.
