Cancel culture has gotten a hold of us as a community. For those who don’t know what cancel culture is, it is essentially a social media claim of people boycotting something, whether it’s a well-known meme, person, or even the store down your street just because they said something that someone didn’t agree with.
Over the years, more and more people have been cancelled. For example, Pink, the female singer, came up with a song called “Dear Mr. President,” but in the song she voiced her opinion about her political view, which then got her cancelled.
In my opinion, I think that it’s entirely moronic and unnecessary. Obviously, people can have opinions and others have a right to agree with them or not. However, I don’t think it’s right for people to get hurt and be able to say “you’re cancelled.” This ultimately leads to the doubt of telling others their opinions.
“Cancel culture in itself isn’t a bad thing, but instead of holding people accountable who actually need to be held accountable, it allows others to bully, haze and ruin people’s lives for holding and sharing opinions deemed unpopular by the mainstream population,” Goshen College staff writer Alyssa McDonald said.
Most times, when people get canceled, it’s for the most unreasonable reasons. For example, K-pop idols. There have been many reports of Kpop idols receiving hate for different reasons. One example is for how these artists look. Most of the time, it’s for being “too skinny” or just for having tattoos. Recently, it’s been getting more and more apparent through every group. Some examples are, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and Blackpink.
Not to mention, people are getting hurt, or worse, killed. Take Charlie Kirk for example. An American citizen, simply using his right of free speech all over the United States. Unfortunately, freedom of speech doesn’t exist anymore in this day and age, so he gets assassinated by a guy that’s upset with Kirk for having opinions.
Again, culture is something that has a hold on us as a community. Some it could be a lesson to keep opinions to yourself, but for others it might be a little much. It’s not always opinions too, it could be things in general, I just believe that because some people can be sensitive to some topics, and we don’t need to be fighting over small things like religion, or politics, or anything like this.
