On the chilly night of Feb. 21, Buena’s annual senior ball took place at the beautiful venue of Moorpark Country Club. With the light quickly fading, students rushed to take pictures amongst the beautiful scenery of the venue.
A brightly lit gazebo caught the attention of many, where it became a hit spot for photographs, chatter and friendly gatherings throughout the night.
This year’s theme of “Memory Lane” was featured throughout the venue, with centerpieces of black and white photos of the class, a “memory jar” made for students to write down their favorite memories of high school, and balloons and decorations of silver, black and white throughout.
“Our senior class president was the junior class vice president last year, and she wanted something incorporated with memories and photos so badly, and now that this was her chance to plan it. She really wanted it to be meaningful,” senior Mia Martinez said about senior Alex Orrantia’s planning process.
The temperature dropped quickly, as many students found themselves seeking refuge from the cold inside, sitting at tables and chatting with their friends until dinner was available to eat.
The food was highly complimented, with many enjoying the bread rolls, caesar salad, potatoes and pasta that were offered. Another highly complimented aspect of the night were the decorations, with many commenting on the nostalgic aspect that they brought.
“It’s really bittersweet, being able to reflect, because reflecting comes with remembering the highs and the lows,” Martinez said. “It’s really special seeing everyone else’s memories, not just mine, and it really shows how Buena has impacted everyone in a different way.”
Once everyone had finished eating, the dance floor opened up for the partygoers, with popular dance tunes such as the “Cha-Cha Slide” being played. Laughter and music could be heard from all corners of the venue, as the giddyness of the seniors could not be contained.
“Senior ball has always been a really special event because it’s a more intimate group. It’s usually smaller, and the kids really like the nostalgia about it that it’s just their class,” Assistant Principal Tina Perez said.
Chaperones and security alike couldn’t help but notice the nostalgic mood that was generated by the dance, with many hugs and sharing of memories being doled out throughout the night.
“This time of year, it’s always really bittersweet. It’s fun to see the students having these final memories, but it’s always a little bit emotional, not necessarily at the dance, but these last few months of senior year are always a little bit emotional,” Assistant Principal Tiffany Dyer said. “You have some kids that are really excited and are ready to move on to the next stage and then you have a lot of nerves, a lot of fears, sadness.”
As the night wrapped up, and the venue emptied out, seniors waved goodbye to their friends and teachers, cherishing these last few memories that were being made.
“I really enjoy being with all of these people and being able to reflect. It’s a happy-sad feeling, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” senior Wyatt Munger said.
