U.S. politician Kristi Noem was dismissed in March 2026 as Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States. This decision was made by President Donald Trump after increasing criticism of her leadership. Noem was previously an important figure in American politics and had made a name for herself, known especially for her tough attitude in immigration policy.
The main reason for her dismissal was several controversial events during her term in office. Particularly, strongly criticised was the handling of their ministry with operations by security authorities, in which U.S. citizens also died. Noem had initially defended this incident and sometimes described the victims as terrorists, which was later refuted by evidence.
In addition, there were allegations of mismanagement and questionable spending. A particularly controversial example was a state-funded advertising campaign worth 200 million dollars, which was awarded without regular tendering procedures. This campaign was supposed to support the government’s immigration policy but was seen and criticised by many politicians as a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Personal scandals also played a role in her dismissal. Reports about a possible relationship with a close employee, as well as criticism of her behaviour at hearings in Congress, additionally damaged her credibility. As a result, the political pressure from both Republican and Democratic parties grew considerably.
In the end, Trump decided to dismiss Noem from her position stating that “leadership in this role requires full trust and confidence, and at this time, a change is necessary.”
Noem was replaced by Senator Markwayne Mullin, who was confirmed by the Senate shortly thereafter. Despite her dismissal, Noem remains politically active and took on a new role as a special envoy for a security project in America.
Her dismissal also sparked broader debates about accountability and transparency within federal agencies. Several lawmakers called for stricter oversight mechanisms to prevent similar controversies in the fututre. Political analysts suggest that this case may influence upcoming elections, as voters increasingly focus on ethics and leadership standards in government positions.
