Buena High School is welcoming a new teacher this year, Geovanna Del Rio. As the new Associate Student Body (ASB) advisor and English teacher, she’s already making a great impression on students and staff in her first year of teaching.
“English was always my strongest subject in school,” Del Rio said. “I loved reading and writing. Even as a kid, I would get books as presents and be so happy.”
Before becoming a teacher, Del Rio earned her degree in English and spent time working with students in tutoring programs and youth leadership activities. Those early experiences, she said, helped her realize that teaching was her true calling.
When asked how she feels teaching here for her first year, Del Rio responded that she feels right at home.
“Everyone has been really welcoming,” Del Rio said. “The teachers always check in on me and make sure I’m doing okay. It’s a really friendly and professional place.”
Along with her passion for English, Del Rio also has a passion for school culture which is why she is the perfect fit for the Associated Student Body (ASB)
“Becoming an ASB teacher has always been one of my dreams,” said Mrs. Del Rio. “I’ve always wanted to be involved in school spirit,” she added. “I love seeing students come together and show pride in their school.”
“It’s really about teamwork and leadership,” Del Rio explained. “We work hard to make sure students feel connected and proud to be part of Buena.”
Del Rio hopes her students learn lessons that go beyond the classroom and really take her lessons to heart and use them in their everyday lives.
“I want them to feel like what they’re learning matters in their own lives,” Del Rio said. “It’s not just about textbooks, it’s about real life.”
Freshman English students reflect positive reviews on their newest teacher. One student said that she “encourages her and is very reassuring.” Another said, “She always treats me with respect and courtesy.”
Although she didn’t attend Buena herself, Del Rio went to Pacifica High School, a neighboring school, and she noted that Buena stands out for its strong school spirit and community.
“There are so many clubs, sports, and activities here,” Del Rio said. “It’s great to see how involved everyone is.”
With her passion for teaching, positivity, and care for her students, it’s safe to say that Mrs. Del Rio is going to be a standout teacher and a beloved part of the Buena community for years to come.
