Every year around winter time, moms settle on the couch with a cup of coffee or tea in their hand to enjoy a Hallmark movie, or at least that’s what mine does. Truly, it’s addicting; you can’t stop watching though the plot is so basic. Yet, the funny thing about Hallmark Christmas movies is that no matter what circumstance, it always ends the same. Christmas time comes around, snow begins to fall and all problems seem to resolve with love.
I’ve never quite understood the allure of Hallmark movies. In a simple setting, Christmas is around the corner in a small town or big city, with the main character having a love interest that they either break up and get back together, or get married a year later. That’s when I realized, that’s the whole point. Corny romance movies are ones that no one can at all resist.
“I feel like a lot of the morals are definitely similar,” freshman Emily Casey said. “But it’s always a fun time watching.”
If you’re much like me, you’re interested in the stereotypical love story that’s easy to make fun of. Often reciting what they say, or generally being infatuated with the second-hand embarrassment that comes with it. That’s the thing that makes it so fun to watch. Yet when it comes to Hallmark, the directors and writers know what captures audiences attention.
In an article from Bryant University, they wrote how “the average age of viewers lands in the late-40s to early 50s. People watch these movies because they love love — no matter how unrealistic the depiction.”
That’s why I believe Hallmark is such a big company around the holidays. They specifically know what their audience likes and it shows, which is why it draws so much attention, because having such a simple little romance movie, with a love triangle or just standard relationships drives people crazy. For instance, I’ll go absolutely insane over a love triangle, especially when it’s incorporated into a Christmas theme. It will genuinely grab and hold my attention while making me go through every possible human emotion.
Hallmark just knows how to successfully pull off Christmas time romance. Whether it’s a normal girl who marries royalty, or someone who’s severely indecisive in picking between two brothers, I heavily suggest that you start watching Hallmark movies. You’ll never know what emotional roller coaster you can go on if you never try.
