The University of Oklahoma (OU) and the University of Texas (UT) share one of the biggest rivalries in college football, known as the Red River rivalry. It gets its name from the Red River that separates the two universities.
“If you were born in the mid-1990s or later, you’ve never known a time when Oklahoma and Texas were not part of the same conference, but for more than 75 years, the two teams met in the annual Red River Showdown rivalry game as members of different conferences,” “Stormin’ in Norman” reporter Chip Rouse reports.
Despite OU and UT not being in the same conference, they were still meeting in an annual removal rivalry showdown, easily making it one of the best rivalries in college football.
“Oklahoma and Texas is easily a top five college football rivalry,” said freshman and Oklahoma fan Logan Alonzo.
The OU and UT game can define a season because both teams are always a contender for the playoffs, but it’s more than that. Not only is the rivalry game good for the team’s record, it’s beneficial for each team’s morale. Something else that helps boost morale is making the playoffs. This can make your team have so much more motivation because making the playoffs is a big reward.
“We definitely should have gotten into the playoffs over James Madison University (JMU),” Freshman and UT fan Owen Powell said.
Powell has a valid point. Texas could have earned their spot in the playoffs, but at the same time, UT has had three losses to JMU’s one loss. JMU didn’t play a single ranked team the whole season, but they still won every game except one.
“James Madison University had one loss, [so] I think they deserve that playoff spot.” Logan Alonzo said.
The Red River rivalry is still a very important game for college football, but, more specifically, it’s very important for OU and UT students and fans. College football has its ups and downs, but the Red River rivalry can make or break a season for either team. They could be having a bad year and win the Red River rivalry, making that losing season so much sweeter.
