The 2026 Winter Olympics season has officially ended! In honor of this, I would like to share my opinion of what the top five out of the 16 sports presented this year were.
At number five, bobsledding had to make it on the list, specifically because of “Cool Runnings” (1993), the amazing Olympics Jamaican bobsledding movie.
Not only do I hold a special place for this movie in my heart, but I also, surprisingly, enjoyed watching bobsledding. It’s a little silly to watch four people book it down a lane in the tightest contraption possible, but I think it’s pretty endearing overall.
Coming in at number four is freestyle skiing. Although I don’t dislike alpine and cross country skiing, I definitely put freestyle skiing at a much higher ranking. I might just be a sucker for a sport that allows flips and tricks, but I also believe higher stakes are what come along with such a precise sport.
What I find interesting is the possibility of failure, which may sound morbid, but the idea of anyone performing such elaborate stunts with the ability to slip at any moment just gives the ability to hype someone that much more.
Starting off the top three is snowboarding. Like I said, I can really appreciate a sport with the opportunity for cool tricks. However, I think my appreciation for this sport comes with my bias of snowboarding myself. I’m certainly not the best, but my dad has definitely taught me a lot about it which has rooted an appreciation for the sport in general.
Runner up is ice hockey. I have always enjoyed watching ice hockey, and one-on-one team sports brings me immense entertainment overall. The U.S. hockey teams this year have certainly not disappointed either, with them putting up an incredibly tense battle for gold with both the women’s and men’s teams coming out on top.
Without a doubt, figure skating takes the gold. I have found figure skating to be an art that I believe almost anyone can see the beauty in. Not only are there shiny outfits, but there are incredibly intense and complicated technical tricks that are just astonishing to watch Olympic athletes succeed in. I’ve found myself going down multiple rabbit holes of the skaters competing, which are a lot more interesting than you’d think.
Regardless of my opinion on the winter sports or the Olympics, I think it’s important to recognize everyone’s specific sports they choose to keep on their screen during this time.
