This year’s World Baseball Classic is planned to take place March 5 through March 17. The stadiums chosen to be played in are Minute Maid park in Houston, Texas, the Tokyo Dome in Japan, the Hiram Bithorn stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and finally, the semi finals and championship game will be played in LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
Four years ago, Japan won the world baseball classic with team USA coming in second place, Mexico coming in third place and Cuba securing fourth place. The game against Japan and USA ended with team USA captain Mike Trout striking out against Shohei Ohtani resulting in a 3-2 game, Japan’s win.
This year, Trout will not be competing in the World Baseball Classic due to injuries and will be passing the role of team captain to New York Yankees’ right fielder Aaron Judge. In an interview with Aaron Judge said getting a chance to represent our country is an honor and is happy to play for the USA and be the captain.
The rosters of the teams are all very well constructed and have a lot of talent. Team USA’s roster includes 16 pitchers with the recently retired pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw, two catchers from the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Will Smith, and Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh, seven Infielders, five outfielders, and Philadelphia Phillies Kyle Schwarber being the team’s only designated hitter.
Team Japan’s roster has 14 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and five outfielders with Ohtani as the team’s only designated hitter. Ohtani will not be one of them to avoid injury before the MLB season but will continue to lead team Japan.
The main goal of the World Baseball Classic is to promote baseball on a global level. While baseball is an extremely popular sport in countries like the United States, Japan and the Dominican Republic, the World Baseball Classic helps the sport reach new fans and regions. It allows countries that do not have major professional leagues to compete on the same stage as players we know well.
The World Baseball Classic is also important because it brings a different kind of excitement to the game. Players are not representing professional teams but their home countries. This creates a strong emotional connection for both players and fans. Games often feel more intense with passionate crowds and high energies similar to other Global sport tournaments and reach a feeling stronger than normal MLB games.
To summarize, the World Baseball Classic plays a key role in growing baseball worldwide. It celebrates international competition and the global nature of the sport making it a unique and meaningful event that stands apart from the regular MLB season.
“It’s a great way for athletes to promote their innate talents on a platform that can showcase them to the world,” senior and baseball player Jacob Del Rio said.
