All over Oxnard, California, you will find restaurants and bakeries, also known as panaderias. Unlike most chain bakeries or restaurants, each panaderia has a story behind it, proud employees and amazing food that is made with love. All of these panaderias deserve recognition for the effort and care that goes into the food and the community they serve.
La Mexicanita Bakery
Located off of N. Ventura Road, La Mexicanita Bakery greets customers with friendly, attentive employees and its colorful displays of polvorónes: from yellow, pink, and chocolate chip, to even red, white and green tricolor polvorónes.
“Es una panadería famosa; it’s famous. And the tamales are very, very good, the bread too. It’s the best bakery in Oxnard,” an employee said. La Mexicanita opened over 25 years ago in Oxnard, and it is definitely worth checking out.
Panaderia La Azteca
Panaderia La Azteca is near Saviers Road and is open every day. When customers walk in, there is a long display case of pan dulce, as well as tables to sit and enjoy your baked goods and other dishes. Not only do they have a vast selection of pan dulce, including different variations of conchas, pan de muerto and mini dual colored polvorónes, but they also make savory dishes and any kind of cakes for any occasion.
Oralia’s Panaderia
On the corner of Wooley Road and I Street is Oralia’s Bakery, and while not evident by the name, Oralia’s also sells delicious tamales along with their amazing selection of pan dulce.
“[The best thing about working here is that] it’s family owned and everyone knows each other,” cashier Jason Suarez said. Oralia’s opened in Oxnard in the early 2000s, and some of their most popular foods and drinks include their champurrado and tamales.
Panaderia Herrera
Panaderia Herrera is located on Colonia Road in Oxnard. Inside, its customers are met with the smell of their delectable pan dulce, which is on display in a case along with framed pages of a picture book written by a professor at California State University Channel Islands featuring Panaderia Herrera. They opened 37 years ago in Oxnard, and their most popular pan dulce are their conchas, elotes, bolillos, and cuernos. The employees enjoy connecting with the community and truly have pride in their panaderia.
Supporting local businesses is so important, and these panaderias and employees care for and connect with the local community as well. These are some of the best panaderias in Oxnard, and they are well worth checking out!
