Adding another movie to the iconic franchise, “Scream 7” came out on Feb. 27, 2026. The new release was immediately controversial due to the star of the previous “Scream 6” movie, Melissa Barrera, being fired from the cast of “Scream 7” due to a scandalous social media post.
Barrera had previously posted on social media a political statement on the Israel-Hamas issues, the studios had deemed anti-semetic.
The “Scream” franchise started in 1996, being an overwhelming hit from the start. It quickly became a fan favorite for many viewers. With the seventh movie debuting, many Ghostface fans rushed to the doors.
“[As a Scream franchise lover], I just had to watch it.…Highly recommended,”Oxnard High School freshman Vanessa Lopez said.
The movie features original franchise protagonist Sidney Evans (Neve Campbell), the most known character along with Ghostface itself. This movie’s plot, however, focuses on Evans’s daughter, Tatum Evans (Isebel May), who is, coincidentally, the same age as S. Evans when Ghostface started terrorizing her.
In “Scream 7,” the movie begins with the original house featured in the first “Scream” film, and then moves to the quiet town where the Evans family now lives, having moved there to escape the big-city fame that has followed S. Evans since she survived a Ghostface attack.

With trauma seeping from S. Evan’s pores with every move she makes, the audience can feel how she is terrified from the life she left behind in Woodsburrow so many years ago. She always hoped that her past life from Woodsburrow wouldn’t follow her to the new life she has built for herself.
Review
As a “Scream” fan this was a decently hyped film. I hoped for more from this movie, but I generally understood the complications. Although, I was a bit disappointed with the production of the film in general and the CGI of the special effects.
Overall, the story line was decent, but there has been a change in direction for the story due to Barrera’s absence. Main star Skeet Ulrich (Billy Loomis) appeared in the first movie and co-starred in “Scream 3” and “Scream 6”. Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) co-starred with Barrera in “Scream 5” and “Scream 6”. Both co-stars of the Scream franchise chose to opt out of the seventh film as Barrera was fired.
At the end of the day, it will go in the books as a historic “Scream” movie that had that same familiarity of the franchise but catered to the Generation Z and younger Millennials movie style preferences.
I don’t believe the original feel of the first “Scream” movie could ever be replicated perfectly, so the thought that it would be like the original is irrational as I, and a lot of “Scream” fans, might have expected in this movie.
I would give this movie 6.5/10. In the beginning, it fared higher, but after the second killing, I felt it fell off. It was quite disappointing. I did like Makenna Grace and that they brought back S. Evans because both actors are one of my favorite actors. Bringing back actors from the past and dead was a nice touch. Either way, as a “Scream” fan, it’s a must watch!
