On March 18th, Marvel’s long awaited “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer finally released. In 4 days, it reached 1 billion views– never before seen numbers of just a trailer.
Warning: the following will contain spoilers for both the previous movies and the trailer.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” recap:
This new movie has been on everyone’s minds since leaving the theater for “No Way Home”, and for good reason last we saw of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, his life was in utter shambles. He’d barely managed to cope with Tony Stark’s death in the “Endgame” movie, only to lose his only semblance of a parental figure less than a year later- his aunt may.
As villains from other universes start terrorizing his world, he’s forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. He makes Dr. Strange cast one last spell, one that makes everyone forget him. His friends, his comrades, his girlfriend, anyone who’d ever heard the name Peter Parker.
The last clip we get is Peter walking into the cafe his girlfriend MJ works. Instead of telling her everything, he orders a coffee and leaves, going into his new college life absolutely alone.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer recap:
The opening scene is Peter Parker sitting on a roof- in a suit nearly identical to the comics- looking at a video of his best friend Ned, and his girlfriend MJ, clearly yearning for the life he could have been living with them.
He then goes into a monologue saying “You don’t remember me, but we used to know each other” as he watches Ned pass by him without a second glance.
We get a look at his new suit in the washer, showing how he no longer has the money of Stark Industries, nor the high tech that came along with it.
There’s then bits and pieces of his life as a hero, fighting villains, getting the keys to the city. But he seems almost discontent still.
The next bit goes into MJ as he narrates, “Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard thing, even if it hurts Peter Parker”, while watching the girl he once loved being caressed by another man.
It takes a dark turn from there, he asks what’s happening to him, looking more than disheveled and passing out, only to wake up in a cocoon of webs… organic webs.
Thus far Tom Holland’s Peter Parker did not have organic webs, only ones he’d factory made.
In assuming concern about his powers he goes to Bruce Banner- The Hulk- for help. Banner says, “If DNA is mutating, that would be enormously dangerous.”
The end implies a new level to spider man, calling the 4th life (or 4th movie in this case) a “rebirth”.
Fan Theories and analysis:
One of the first attention grabbers is the title “Brand New Day”. Up until now in the Tom Holland trilogies, every movie has incorporated the word ‘home’ (No way Home, Far from Home, Homecoming.). The newest however, does not. What does that mean for Peter? Is this lack of wording meant to symbolize his isolation or lack of home?
More than likely. It’s seeming like this movie is going to show a darker side of the friendly neighborhood superhero. Every part of Peter looks so exhausted throughout the trailer, it’s such a stark contrast from the colorful lively trailers we’ve seen in the past.
His mood doesn’t seem to be the only murk though. As mentioned earlier, there’s a quick snippet of Peter’s eyes going black for a moment. We’ve seen a handful of villains featured in the trailer alone: Tarantula, Scorpion, Boomerang, and The Punisher. But only one Spider-Man’s villain could explain the black eyes: Venom.
Could it be a stretch? Sure. But also take into consideration the end credit scene from “Far from Home” where Venom is featured. The Marvel cinematic universe has never been one to make an end credit scene go discarded.
Another confusion among fans has been the mystery of Sadie Sink. It was revealed back in (enter month), that Sadie Sink had been casted for the new movie, yet we didn’t see her once in the trailer.
It was initially thought she’d be playing Jean Grey with her fire red hair, and while that’s still possible, The Punisher’s appearance has given a new perspective- Rachel Cole Alves. Rachel is another red headed female, The Punisher’s partner/sidekick. Looking at Sink’s other roles, she could most definitely pull that off.
The real conversation among fans has been one thing though, will Peter get his old life back?
Well, with the mention of Bruce Banner, a theory had arose. Everyone forgot Peter Parker, but maybe The Hulk didn’t. Hulk and Banner are not the same person, they essentially switch off consciousness. It’s thought that if Hulk was not counted when Dr. Strange made everyone forget Peter, there’s a chance he still remembers.
Something similar happened in the comic Immortal Hulk, in a one-shot featuring Peter. Hulk claims everyone forgot but “Hulk never forgets.”
If The Hulk does remember, could he possibly be the key to helping others follow suit? Or is Peter destined for loneliness?
Either way, Marvel did a fantastic job with this trailer, and has fans scavenging for clues. Let’s hope the movie doesn’t disappoint, not that they ever have before.
