Two teams, 8 buzzers, one final question. A buzzer sounds before the trivia question has been fully announced, Scott Maninen representing senior Michael Ramariez’s team,  could not answer the question and after a collective grumble from the audience, the team lost by 5 in the student vs. teachers Knowledge Bowl event in the little theater Nov. 30.

The Knowledge bowl team represents Buena’s top academic talent as the group of scholars competes in quiz-bowl trivia compet

itions against schools throughout Ventura County.  The team, which is typically composed of juniors and seniors, has two promising returners: Rylan Cooper and Micahel Ramirez. The Teacher vs. Student Knowledge Bowl Competition, typically held in spring semester, had this teaser competition with the goal of advertising the team to prospective members. The final round of tryouts will be held Dec. 14 in room 42 during 7th period.  The final score of this event was 110-100, a victory for Rylan Cooper.

Andrew Coates is the advisor for Knowledge Bowl, and organizes the tryouts and the team for the season. He also provided the questions for the team to practice with.

“Typically we host a teacher versus student competition in the springtime,” Coates said. “Because we don’t have a team yet, I chose two of my returners to partner up with 3 teachers of their choosing.”

Any student at Buena is invited to try out for the team. Though, returners do see some strategy in recruiting students who are not graduating this year.

“It would be nice to get younger members like juniors so they can continue the program,” Ramirez said.

If you think you would enjoy Knowledge Bowl, try trying out and joining the small community with loads of knowledge.

“It gives people who are into nerdy stuff and who are into getting good grades a chance to compete in something and be part of a team,” Cooper said.
